The Paediatric Psychology Clinic
The Paediatric Psychology Clinic specialises in supporting children, young people and their families in South West London who are navigating the challenges of living with a health condition. Our team of HCPC registered practitioner psychologists work closely with families - including parents and siblings - to provide compassionate, expert care tailored to each family’s unique situation. We aim to help children and their loved ones build resilience, adjust to new diagnoses, manage emotional wellbeing, navigate taking medication or undergoing procedures and strengthen relationships. Together we support the whole family on their journey toward understanding, coping and thriving. We are able to offer families appointments virtually or in-person, at one of our south west London clinic spaces or at your home.
What is paediatric psychology?
Paediatric psychology is an area of psychology which focusses on understanding and supporting the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral development of children and adolescents, particularly in the context of health and illness. Paediatric psychologists can support families with a wide range of concerns, ranging from anxiety, depression and developmental disorders to coping with chronic medical conditions and trauma. By integrating psychological theory with child development and healthcare, paediatric psychologists can promote resilience, well-being and healthy adjustment to support coping.
We specialise in providing a wide range of evidence-based therapeutic interventions for children, young people and their families. Our team of experienced clinicians offers therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). We work collaboratively with families and other professionals to ensure a holistic and compassionate approach, helping individuals to navigate challenges and thrive in all areas of life.
What approaches do we use?
We support children, young people and their families to manage their psychological wellbeing in the context of physical health conditions and medical experiences. We can help young people manage the emotional, behavioural and psychological challenges that often accompany illness, treatment and hospitalisation. Specific areas of support include:
Adjusting to medical diagnoses or treatment
Navigating procedural or treatment-related anxiety (such as blood tests or scans)
Support with adherence and coping (for example with medication, dietary changes or physiotherapy)
Supporting with chronic or recurrent pain (e.g. headaches or abdominal pain)
Supporting with intrusive symptoms such as fatigue or nausea
Managing feelings of difference, for example due to visible differences or the impact of a chronic health condition
Managing feelings of isolation, frustration or sadness related to the daily impact of living with a health condition
Supporting siblings who may be feeling worried, left out or impacted by the health condition
Supporting parents to manage the emotional impact of their child’s condition
Treating trauma symptoms arising as a result of an individual’s medical experiences (including treatment for their family members)
Support with constipation, soiling and toileting
We are experienced at considering factors that might impact on psychological wellbeing, such as neurodiversity and developmental needs.
